Papier-Mâché Moon Tutorial and Supply List

Papier-Mâché Moon Tutorial and Supply List

If you love charming, handmade Christmas décor with a nostalgic, vintage feel, then these DIY paper mache moon ornaments are sure to steal your heart! I adore Christmas and all the cozy, magical beauty that comes with it, and each year I experiment with new designs inspired by antique decorations, old-world charm, and classic holiday traditions.

These paper mache moon ornaments take a little time and patience to create, but the result is truly worth it. Their soft textures, delicate details, and timeworn finish give them a beautifully aged look, making them perfect for creating a warm, old-fashioned Christmas atmosphere.

With this guide, you’ll receive a full materials list along with a step-by-step YouTube tutorial filled with helpful tips and techniques to help you achieve that perfectly vintage look. You can easily customize your moons by playing with different paper textures, finishes, paint colors, and subtle aging techniques to make each ornament uniquely your own.

List Of Supplies:

  • Card Board - I use this 1/16" cardboard for so many crafts! It’s the perfect staple to keep on hand for all kinds of creative projects. I also use it for my Christmas Houses, so don’t skip adding a few sheets to your supply stash—you’ll find endless fun ways to use it!
  • Paper Scraps - Use old sheet music, newspapers, flyers, or any paper you have on hand. No scraps? No problem—regular printer paper works just as well!
  • Neutral pH Adhesive - This is a glue that I mix with water for the actual paper mache process.
  • Water
  • Mechanical Pencil
  • Tin Foil - Creates fullness and dimension, giving the moon a lovely three-dimensional appearance.
  • Masking Tape - Perfect for holding the tinfoil and floral wire in place on the cardboard.
  • Glass Glitter - For adding the glitter detail along the hat edge of the moon
  • Precision Craft Glue - This is a must have. It is quite literally my favorite crafting glue. It works well on so many projects. Here is the link to the re-fill as well.
  • Floral Wire
  • Wire Cutters
  • Skewers  - Used for forming wire loops on the ornaments and for suspending the paper mache pieces while they dry.
  • Paint Brush & Acrylic Paint- For painting and adding finishing details once the paper mache is fully dry.
  • Glitterific Acrylic Paint - This paint goes on clear and is filled with subtle glitter flecks that add just the right amount of sparkle, making your ornament beautifully pop.
  • Markers/Pens - I use these for drawing on the mouth and eye details on the moon.
  • Ribbon/Seam Binding - I love the way the seam binding I used looks on the ornaments, so I'm linking here for you too!
  • Tin Bells - These are the perfect addition to your ornament-making supplies! A lovely little essential to keep on hand for all your holiday crafting projects.
